In a series on cava, I cannot omit the harvest! And harvesting cava-grapes has started this week in the Penedes, with the chardonnay.
From Can Sadurni, in the village of Begues, 15 kilometer from Barcelona, I got a message from Barbara Siemianiuk, export manager at Montau de Sadurni. The Sadurni family has lived and worked at Can Sadurni from the 15th century, and produces traditional, quality oriented cavas and still wines. Barbara told me about the harvest and send me some pictures as well.
About the chardonnay, she writes (also on her blog): “We seek a good balance of sugar and color, and harvest the chardonnay when the skin is thin and the concentration of sugar and acidity at its best.
We have good expectations for this vintage due to optimum climatic conditions. We had a sunny spring with sufficient moisture and a long, dry summer. Factors that favor a slow ripening and elaborate flavors in the grape skin, which will be reflected in the quality of the wine later on.”
Next week, the xarel.lo will be harvested. I will come back on Montau Sadurní then and of course will also introduce the cava’s.
